I Can't Do Yoga

I Can't Do Yoga

In my thinking there are three types of people when it comes to getting introduced to yoga. There are those who just don't give a hoot and never will. Then, there are others who have thought about it and have played with the idea of taking a class even enrolled in classes regularly. Then there are others who have thought about it for one second and say absolutely not. It is this third group that I address here.

When I meet new people and I tell them that I am a yoga teacher, typically they'll say, "oh that's nice." While others ask, "where do you teach?" Still others say "you'll never get me to do yoga." Or, "these knees don't get on the floor" or "there is no way I am going to do lotus."

Anyone Can Do Yoga

My response to that last person is now and has always been. "Anyone can do yoga." You don't have to have a lithe, flexible 30 year-old body to do yoga proficiently. All you need is your own body, such as it is, and your present life considerations.

Yoga is about being you and becoming more of you. Full stop. JUST YOU. Full stop.

Whether you have a typical 60 year old body, or one that has replacement parts, or you're in your 90s in long-term, care you can still do yoga. I have taught yoga for all of the above.

There are proficient yogis in this world who have lived into their second century of life. Yes, past 100 years old!

Some people become yogis at an early age and they probably get the most benefit out of a lifetime of practice. While others start later in life (I started at age 55). We still get lots of benefit and can bring longevity to our bodies and minds.

Modifying the poses is the key to a lifetime of yoga practice. An experienced registered yoga teacher can make yoga accessible for you no matter your physical limitations. She will help you modify your poses that benefit you. That is, the you are right now in the present moment.

So, if you, or your family, friends, acquaintances have said absolutely no to giving yoga a try, encourage them to at least try it out with a teacher who makes yoga accessible to you. Finding the right teacher for you is the key to a successful lifetime yoga practice.

You can contact me directly or find other registered yoga teachers (RYT) that meet your needs at YogaAlliance.org.
