Musings on Journeys
Laurie Tenzer | FEB 19, 2024
There are mental journeys, there are fanciful journeys, there are journeys to the self. Then there are the actual physical journeys that we take in the real world that we are all familiar with. All are journeys of discovery.

A journey means that we start in a comfortable place and, by moving forward to another place, expand the boundaries from what we already know toward something that is new. It means going from our comfort zone to expanding into horizons that we've never thought of before. It means bringing new ideas and broadening the knowledge of what is happening within ourselves.
We take in some new knowledge about a place, a dream, ourselves.
Each step we take forward is a journey to a new place whether it is physical, mental, or spiritual. The old Chinese proverb, "a journey begins with the first step" cannot state it more succinctly. That is, it is not the end goal, but the journey along the way that helps us continue our growth.
The journey of self-discovery lasts a lifetime. Once we step off this journey we slowly begin to lose our life-energy -- little by little. By continuing to move forward via discovery we continue to grow and maintain, or even increase, our life energies.

I speak to these musings from my personal experience of having traveled to several new (for me) destinations during this past year. These trips have helped me to go deeper into learning, not just the world around me, but by contrasting this new outside world learning more about myself. Travel makes us better people. It gives us new experiences and more interactions.
In my journey of discovering myself, I have found it healthier for me to also travel outwardly. That is, a wonderful way to enhance one's inner being is by physically traveling throughout the real world.
I've always been an inward-looking person but love to experience new opportunities and adventures even if they seem a bit scary. Challenging our own boundaries in this way can help to expand the boundaries of our inner being and, thereby, continue to grow.
We can go on yoga retreats around the world to exotic destinations such as Bali, Costa Rica, or Barcelona. But what any yoga practice teaches, is that the journey and the change happens inside of us. Being on the mat, no matter where in the world you are, can help to enhance your inward journey toward self-discovery.There are mental journeys, there are fanciful journeys, there are journeys to the self.
