The Energy Body: Pranamaya Kosha

Today we pick up the koshas again with the second layer of being, the pranamaya kosha. The prana of pranamaya kosha is your life force. When the prana is very strong it creates a pathway to the spirit which we will discuss in following weeks.

The pranamaya kosha is where we find the energetic layer of the body, sometimes called the subtle body or astral body. It mimics the physical body and converts it to an energetic body. The pranamaya kosha surrounds the physical body with a light that hovers just outside the physical body. Yogic practices such as poses, breathwork, and meditation, can expand this energetic layer.

The seven chakras lay in this energetic layer of being. (See my previous blogs to learn more about the chakras and register for my chakra workshops.) During yoga nidra meditation we begin to expand this layer as we scan the body and begin to tap into those energy centers known as the chakras.

We may be able to feel the pranamaya sheath as energetic sensations. Some people are even able to see another person's energetic body via an aura surrounding the body. In both eastern and western religious art, you may see this aura depicted as a halo around mystics and saints.

In Yoga Nidra, we transition to this layer as we do a body scan to begin the rotation of consciousness allowing us to go deeper into the meditation as the body releases and relaxes.
