Yoga in Autumn: Part II
Laurie Tenzer | SEP 18, 2023
In the northern hemisphere, Autumn begins this coming weekend: September 22 at around 3:00 a.m. In warmer climates, we do not have much in the way of falling leaves, but the sun does get lower in the sky and temperatures begin to cool
While the words, Autumn and Fall are used interchangeably, the more common term for this transitory season in American English is Fall. Historically, the use of the word Fall as it defines the season refers to falling leaves (Merriam-Webster website). (If you find words, fascinating, as I do, click on the link in the Readings & Resources section for more information.)

We can extend the Fall metaphor of falling to refer to tumbling to the ground. Subsequently, we can apply the term to attentiveness to the risk of falling: fall prevention. By practicing yoga postures that help with our balance and grounding ourselves into the earth, Fall can have a more positive effect on our bodies.
Amazingly (or is it?), many yoga postures are the same postures recommended for both the season and fall prevention.
Below, I give you a sequence that applies to both types of Fall. The sequence is a gentle sequence for yogis with a little experience. Always modify as appropriate for your body. If you are a "stone cold" beginner and need someone to help, I am available for private lessons.
Before practicing any yoga asana, it is important that you get clearance from you doctor. The poses described here can be done by a beginner with some yoga experience. Be sure to use appropriate props that match your level of practice. Nevertheless, it is always better to be safe and check with your doctor first.
Warm Up: To lessen physical risks, always warm up properly before engaging in any physical activity. End every practice with savasana. Below is a sampling of twelve poses that help with the transition to Autumn. They also assist with lessening the risk of a fall. Hold each posture for 6 breaths. Use props (including a wall, as needed). If you prefer a larger version of the sequence image, go to this link. https://www.tummee.com/yoga-sequence/cFnpc. You will also be able to print a copy there.

If you prefer a larger copy of the sequence that is also printer ready, go to this link.
End the sequence with resting or corpse pose: savasana.
Practice Mindfulness: When doing these poses be mindful of your capabilities. Mindfulness, in this case means, exploring the state of your body at the time that you do the practice. Also remember to bring awareness to your breath.
Yoga Nidra is one practice that can help you to cultivate your mindfulness.
