Yoga Behind the Desk Part 3: The Hips
Laurie Tenzer | MAY 22, 2023
Concluding the three-part series on Desk Yoga is yoga for the hips. Sitting in one position all day can really tighten up the muscles that surround the hip joints. To maintain your mobility while seated in a desk chair all day move the hips throughout the day.

In sedentary desk work, we generally keep our hip area in one position. Seated on the buttocks and facing forward. It is important to move that area to other positions throughout the day to avoid any stiffness in the area. The hip area is comprised of several muscles. Among them are the glutes and the poses. I have prepared this sequence for the hips while you site behind the desk.
These poses include foot flex. buttock squeeze, windshield wiper, chair pigeon, seated external hip rotation and seated half-wind pose.
My favorite one in this section is the buttock squeeze. The butt squeeze is a movement that you can practice throughout the day with no one else even noticing! In the accompanying hip sequence, you will notice there is no picture for it, so I want to be sure that you bring your attention to it.
Once again, you can use any of these poses throughout your day in any order that you like. Just be sure to be kind and gentle to yourself. As always, seek medical clearance before opting for a new physical activity.

All poses that are cued for the right side should be repeated on the left side.
Yoga Nidra classes continue on Monday nights at 7:30pm. Due to family concerns, I have canceled the second weekly Yoga Nidra offering. Yoga Nidra can be so healing and restful for whatever stresses you are experiencing. Do a Yoga Nidra practice. You will not regret it. I continue to offer face-to-face private and online lessons.

Using yoga and meditation techniques, I am available to support an organization's institutional mission and values tailored to the needs of employees. Meditation and yogic exercise have been shown to promote wellness that boosts employee morale, effectiveness, and productivity (Sheelu, Garg, & Rastogi, 2022). If you know someone who may be interested in setting up a meditation or yoga class for a retreat, as a regular amenity, or employee benefit in their organization please forward this link to them.

I remain available for private lessons at your location. Summer is coming. In Florida, many of us are driven into the indoor refreshing coolness of the AC. We spend less time outdoors perhaps lessening the use of our bodies during these hot times. A private yoga lesson during the hot weather allows you to maintain an exercise and meditative regimen. My private lessons are accessible to all and tailored to your specific needs. A special feature of my private lesson offering is that I provide you with a personalized lesson plan. This plan will help you maintain the practice on the days you are not working with me. Please be in touch with your interest in this opportunity and we can set up an appointment to get you started.
